From the late 14th century, Middle English armonye, Old French armonie, Latin and Greek harmonia. Meaning: agreement, means of joining, framework, agreement of feeling, concord.
As you know, Feng Shui, literally translated into english, is "wind-water." This is a shorthand, taken from this passage from Zangshu, or Book of Burial, by Guo Pu:
Qi rides the wind and scatters, but is retained when encountering water. The goal of Feng Shui is to create harmonious spaces by enhancing the positive flow of Qi, or Life Force, using Nature's elements. This, in turn, creates harmony in our lives. Remember the law: when your space changes, you change too - so best to pay close attention to the ways in which you, or others, change your space! And, don't forget - harmony is a relationship, not a one-way street. Harmony is not created at the expense of others, or at the expense of the earth.
Bees have lived in harmony with their environment for a hundred million years. Descended from predatory wasps, bees turned from eating other insects to feeding on flowers shortly after flowers first appeared on the scene. And instead of a purely parasitic relationship wherein they benefit at the expense of the flower, they developed a symbiotic relationship of mutual benefit. In return for the nectar and pollen they gather from the flower, bees pollinate the flowers, promoting the end result of fruiting.
What better example to follow, then, as we apply basic principles of Feng Shui to our home and office spaces to create more harmonious environments which will encourage harmony inside ourselves? Using objects that which have been made using materials or methods that harm the environment cannot be true Feng Shui. How could a Feng Shui cure for abundance, such as a Lucky Cat or Fortune Toad, made from toxic plastic in factories with no regard for the planet possibly bring harmony or true abundance, to ourselves or our planet?

Look around the room you're in and consider the materials and production methods used to create the objects you've brought in to enhance the space. Do these materials and methods work to create true harmony?
